Okay yall, I need a little help. I think 5urprise has become my actor bias group (who knew that was a thing?!). So, in addition to being addicted to K-pop, I am absolutely hooked on K-dramas too. Usually, when I’m watching a show, if someone looks familiar or if I really like their character, then I’ll look them up. Since I’ve been watching a couple dramas this year, I’ve looked up several actors and have noticed something interesting. In the actor biographies of a couple of my favorites, it says that they’re a member of the group 5urprise.
Naturally, being the curious being I am, I had to do a quick google search to see what this group is about. 5urprise was created by Fantagio consisting of: Seo Kang-Joon, Gong Myung, Yoo Il, Kang Tae-oh and Lee Tae-hwan. The group was formed in 2013 and debuted in a Drama Toon called ‘After School Clothing’. Now they’ve been working for a while, but I admittedly have only watched a few dramas older than 2015, and so I haven’t run into them a lot.
My first encounter with this group was when I fell in love with the second lead, which happens way too often, of ‘Cheese in the Trap‘. When I looked him up, I found his name was Seo Kang Jun and was a member of 5urprise. This was the first time I’d heard of the group and hadn’t seen any of the other actors yet. His role as the bad boy that had all the best intentions really stole my heart; I was rooting for him the entire show! When I see that he’s so different personally, I’m convinced of his skills.
My second and third encounters were via Gong Myung. He played the second lead in both ‘The Bride of Habaek‘ and in ‘Revolutionary Love‘. It was in this second show, ‘Revolutionary Love’, that I had to figure out where I knew him from. Low and behold, it was not only from ‘Bride of Habaek’ but also from 5urprise! He also played a kind of “bad” character in these two dramas and his performance was great. He has a great way of making you hate him but feel bad for him at the same time.
I would also meet Lee Tae Hwan in the drama ‘W‘ and ‘Thumping Spike‘, in which he played supporting roles. I’m not sure what compelled me to look him up, he was great in both roles though admittedly not prominent roles. He has a great aura about him that makes one curious about what other work he’s done. I think it was his intensity in ‘W’ that made me seek him out.
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting the other two members, Kang Tae Oh and Yoo Il, though I plan to soon. Kang Tae Oh has starred in highly rated shows such as: ‘Short‘, ‘That Man Oh Soo‘, and ‘Twenty Again‘. Yoo Il has also starred in dramas such as ‘That Man Oh Soo‘ and ‘You Will Love Me’.
I hope that you check out some of the dramas I’ve mentioned and support these wonderful actors. I guarantee you, you won’t watch a show where they don’t capture your attention!
