One thing I’ve noticed as I’ve matured and tried to develop my level of interest in different things is that there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into the creation of things we love. That’s why there are acknowledgments in books and essays and credits for different things, though they tend to go unnoticed or skipped over. I wanted to do an appreciation post for some of my favorite producers in the k-pop/k-r&b/k-hip-hop scenes who work hard to bring us dope beats that our faves sing or rap over and snatch our edges.

First, I have to give it up to Dean, also known by his producer name Deanfluenza. He has been in the game singing, rapping, and producing since he was around the age of 16. Not only does he produce his own stuff but he works with other artists as a producer and features as an artist on tracks with well-known names such as Suran, Heize, Crush, EXO, VIXX, Syd, Justin Bieber and many more.

Dean says that he likes to make music that he wants to listen to. He’s made it clear that he used to make music for everyone else but that can become toxic and now he makes it for himself. I think that this is one reason that his smooth alternative r&b vibes with the occasional hip-hop and funk heavy tracks always go over well with the public; the thought of making something for yourself that you can love and be proud of is felt in the music itself.

“I need a Cha Cha beat boy!” If you’ve heard a smooth female sounding voice spitting this line as a beat starts then you have heard a song produced by the wonderful Cha Cha Malone. He is an American producer who helped found H1ghr Music with Jay Park and is also very prominent in the k-hip hop/r&b scene today. He’s worked with artists such as: Hoody, Jay Park, Henry, Loona, One, Loco, Red Velvet, etc.

He has said in the past that he is a student of music who loves to experiment and try out different styles or elements, and so you know off the bat that whatever he makes will have his own brand of magic in it. Without fail, his music tends to have a very groovy vibe, one that does not allow you to listen to it without getting down just a little bit.

Last but not least is producing duo GroovyRoom, consisting of Park Gyu Jeong and Lee Hwi Min, who are really popping off right now! They debuted in 2015 and have been tearing up the scene since then. They have worked with prominent artists such as Heize, Jay Park, Sik-K, Dok2, DPR Live, etc.

Their songs tend to have a really wavy and chill vibe that makes you want to kick back, play games, draw and spend time with friends. Don’t get it twisted though, their beats inspire that good old shoulder to get some action and a few low-key body rolls as well.

If you have a favorite song or artist that has a sound or vibe that’s really been sticking to you lately, I hope you’ll go look into the people they’ve worked with. You may find some producers and artists who do it for you just as much. There’s a whole network of people whose work we love and may not even know. Do you have any favorite producers?
